TailsxAmy: A Broken Rose

"I'm sorry...I'm sorry..." That was all she could think to say. Sitting alone on a hospital bed was a pink hedgehog who held a bloody bandage tight in her hands. Tears slid down her face and stained the bandage even more, causing the blood to flower out and dampen more of the cloth. She tossed it in the trashbin and covered her face, letting herself weep. She did not even hear the door to the room open.

"A-Amy? What's the matter?" a startled voice asked. Amy looked up and saw a golden fox standing before her, his twin tails swaying furiously. She wiped off her face and looked out the window. It was dark outside and her mind was playing tricks on her. It was almost like she was watching a blue hedgehog run off into the woods over and over again in her mind.

"...he's gone..." she whispered. The fox gave a start.

"Wh-What?..."

"He's gone, Tails! He left me for him!" she shouted. More tears fell as she glared at Tails. 'Can't he just go away?!' she thought angrily. 'I don't...wanna see anyone right now...' Amy sniffled and felt around in her pocket for a hankerchief.

"...Here," Tails said softly. He was holding out one of his gloves. "S-Sorry, I don't have a napkin or something, but this should do the trick, right?..."

Amy snatched it from his hand and blew her nose into it. 'Why did HE of all people have to come in and catch me like this?!' The tears would not stop and Tails stood their in silence, watching his glove becoming more damp from the many fluids dripping from her face. She looked like a child to him, lips quivering, cheeks red, whimpering under her breath.

"He...really hurt you...didn't he?" Tails said under his breath. Amy shook her head and clutched at the glove. Her fingers were trembling. 'Maybe I'm just squeezing this stupid glove too hard...' she thought. She gave a start as a gentle hand covered both of hers and squeezed them reassuringly.

"Please, Amy...don't cry about Sonic anymore, okay?"

His soft hands and warm voice made her stomach squirm. Amy could not take it. She threw her arms around his neck and wept into his shoulder. Tails wrapped gentle arms around her waist and patted her back as she sobbed incoherent words to him.

"I-I just...I just want...him h-happy...!" she stuttered between sobbing gasps. Tails drew his fingers through her hair and held Amy to himself tightly. He nodded slightly, unsure of what else to do.

"I-I know you do, Amy, just... He's not worth crying over..." Amy just stared at him blankly as he wiped away her tears with his ungloved hand. Tails gave a start when she felt her hand touch his cheek.

"...Why are...YOU crying, Tails?..." Tails gave her a sad smile and took her hand.

"Because you are worth crying over, Amy..." he said quietly, kissing the tip of her finger, tasting his own tears there. Amy blushed, but looked away.

"Tch...don't take advantage of me just because I'm heartbroken. I'm not stupid, ya know..." she mumbled, irritated. Tails laughed softly.

"I know you're not stupid. I have better taste than stupid girls. Don't think so little of me, jeez, Amy. I'm not a creep and I'm not insensitive to your feelings. Why do you think I'm crying for you? I know you love him and you will always love him no matter what I do." Amy glared at him.

"And I'm not a stupid fangirl either! I can get over him whenever I want! I just...can't stop crying!" she said angrily, pushing at him. Tails took her face into his hand and touched her lips softly with his thumb.

"I can try and help with that..." he whispered. Before Amy could protest, Tails kissed her swiftly on the lips, holding her entire body to him with his iron grip. Amy floundered for a few moments, but as she felt his mouth move against her own and the hot glid of his tongue, her movements stopped and she allowed him to kiss her. He broke away a few moments later and watched as she opened her eyes. He grinned.

WHAP!

He rubbed his cheek as Amy moved past him and opened the door. She looked back at him and saw his tails droop. Her heart was pounding and her breath came fast and sharp. 'What's going on here?!' she thought, frustrated at her mood swings.

"H-Hey...Amy?" Amy snapped back to reality and saw Tails giving her the same sad smile from before. "I'm sorry about that, but...you stopped crying." She paused and realized he was right, she no longer felt the desire to cry. There was a moment's silence before she smirked.

"I guess you're right...Thanks." Tails smiled shyly, but Amy did not leave. She rolled her eyes and kissed him quickly on the cheek. "And I may always be in love with Sonic, but that doesn't mean I can't learn to love someone else." Tails blinked as she waved goodbye and shut the door behind her. He absentmindedly heard her footsteps getting father away down the hall. He grinned and took off out the door after her, calling out her name.

The next day, the town was in an uproar. There were whispers around Knothole that Sonic and Shadow were engaged and that all of the females, as well as a few males, were all furious at this. Didn't they hate each other? But they're both guys! What will the princess think when she hears about this?

But that was not the only bit of gossip to be had that day. Apparently Amy and Tails were now an item and had been seen leaving the hospital the previous night, laughing and being quite friendly with each other. Wasn't she upset about Sonic and Shadow's engagement? Why Tails of all people? What is going on with the world today?! Blasted kids!

Knothole would never be the same...
